Graveside services for Flewellyn Flowers Waidner, age 84 are at 2:00PM on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 in Laurel Hill Cemetery on Mississippi Street. Mrs. Waidner died Saturday, June 19, 2004 in Jacksonville, FL. Born in 1919 in Thomasville, Georgia to William Howard Flowers and Flewellyn Evans Strong, Mrs. Waidner graduated with the Thomasville High School Class of 1937. She attended Duke University, where she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority graduating in 1941 with a BA in French. In 1942, Mrs. Waidner joined the newly formed Women?s Auxillary Army Corp WAAC and was a member of the first class of WAAC officers. She trained at Ft. Des Moines, Iowa, and on graduation was assigned to recruiting duties in South Georgia. While commanding a WAAC Company in Miami, she met Lt. John T. Waidner of Wilmette, IL, whom she married in Thomasville on August 2, 1943. After the war, the Waidners settled in Thomasville. In 1957 the family moved to Glendale, California. While in California, Mrs. Waidner worked as a Boy Scout and Girl Scout volunteer, and later as paid staff for San Fernando Valley Girl Scout Council. Upon retirement in 1976, Mr. & Mrs. Waidner returned to her hometown of Thomasville. Mrs. Waidner was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Waidner, Sr. in 1984 and her daughter, Susan Cole of Boise, Idaho in 1989. Mrs. Waidner is survived by her children, John T. Waidner of Carmel, Indiana, Flewellyn Podris of Jacksonville, FL, Robert F. Waidner of Jackson, Mississippi; 8 grandchildren and her brother, Langdon S. Flowers of Thomasville, GA. The family will gather after the service at the home of J. K. and Claire Thomas, 103 E. Club Dr., Thomasville, GA. 31792.
