James Bowers Williams

James Bowers Williams, 44, beloved son of Mrs. Nathaniel M. Williams, Jr. Peppy and the late Mr. N. M. Williams, Jr. died Thursday, January 13, 2005, of pneumonia, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. A resident Of Knoxville, Tennessee, Mr. Williams was serving as a nuclear engineering project manager for DeNuke Contracting Services. Mr. Williams was born in Thomasville, Georgia on January 18, 1960, was baptized at Pasadena Community United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Thomasville during the years that he lived here. Mr. Williams graduated from Thomasville High School in 1978. He was an honor student, a member of the National Honor Society, a National Merit Scholar, and won several mathematics and science awards. Scouting and hiking were an important part of his early years. He attained Eagle Scout status and attended Camp Philmont in New Mexico. During vacations, he hiked much of the Appalachian Trail. Other avid interest included duck hunting, saltwater fishing, target shooting, and travel. After attending Georgia Institute of Technology, where he majored in industrial and systems engineering, Mr. Williams joined the United States Navy. His intensive nuclear training was followed by active service on several nuclear submarines, and his tours of duty include Portugal, the Mediterranean and Black Seas, and a long period in the Arctic Sea. After leaving the Navy, Mr. Williams began his career of technical nuclear engineering with ChemNuclear in Columbia, S.C. He had more than 17 years experience in all aspects of radioactive and mixed waste management for a variety of clients, both federal agencies and commercial industries. Mr. Williams is survived by his daughter, Allison Mary Williams, of Chicago, Illinois. Other survivors include his mother, Peggy L. Williams, Mrs. Nathaniel M. Williams, Jr., a brother, Nathaniel M. Williams, III Mac, and a sister, Joanie M. Williams, all of Thomasville, a sister, Anne Williams Cottingham, a brother in law, David Cottingham, and two nieces, Caitlin R. Cottingham and Laura L. Cottingham, of Washington, D.C. Other close relatives include, aunt, Mrs. Joan A. Tucker of St. Petersburg, Florida, uncles, Dr. James Spencer of Dawson, Georgia, Alfred Bowers of Meigs, Georgia, cousins, Randall Appleyard of Rye, N.Y., Dr. Joan Appleyard Reed of Houston, Texas, Ellen Spencer of Austin, Texas, Byron Spencer of Savannah, Georgia, Pat and Carol Marshall of Sandestin, Florida, Bill and Lee Marshall of Lebanon, Tennessee, special friends are Merl and Marge Clark of Thomasville. Memorial services will be held at 3:00PM Saturday, January 22, in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church, Thomasville. Reverend James Spencer will preside. The family will receive friends at home, 303 South Pinetree Boulevard after the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the James B. Williams Scholarship Fund now being established at Thomas County Federal Savings and Loan. Visitors may sign the online guest register at www.allenfh.com .
