Services for Lettie Elizabeth Gwaltney Turner, 87, of Thomasville, are at 10 a.m., Monday, May 25, 2009, at First Baptist Church in the chapel. The Rev. Tom Jacobs will officiate and interment is in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Turner died May 21at Langdale Hospice House in Valdosta. Born Dec. 3, 1921, in Thomasville, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Chloe Hatcher Gwaltney. On Jan. 18, 1947, in Thomasville, she married J.W. Turner, who preceded her in death in 2001. Mrs. Turner was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Kindergarten and was involved in the Women's Missionary Union. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and was an officer for the Southwest Georgia Genealogical Society and was on the board of the Genealogical Library Society. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Letty Jane and Charles Allen of Valdosta; son and daughter-in-law, Wilton and Mary Turner of Foley, Ala.; grandchildren, James Allen and wife, Lynn of Chattanooga, Tenn., Bradley Turner and wife, Ashlee of Nashville, Tenn., Laurie Darling and husband, Tony of Las Vegas, Nev.; great-grandchild, Patrick Allen of Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Ruth Gwaltney of Tallahassee, Fla.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, B.L. and Katherine Turner of Thomasville; Charles and Doris Tomlin of West Milton, Ohio and Glenn and Elise Turner of Six Mile, S.C.; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn Gwaltney Craig and Bob Craig; brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Eunice Turner; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lillie and Russell Rehberg. Memorial contributions may be made to South Georgia Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 3307, Thomasville, GA. 31799 or to Hospice of Southwest Georgia, 818 Gordon Ave., Thomasville, GA. 31792.
