Michael Clay Sewell, 63, of Thomasville Georgia, passed away December 14, 2020, at home surrounded by his family. Clay was born August 11, 1957, in Atlanta, Georgia; he was the beloved son of Joyce Adams Brown and stepson of Lt. Col. Robert L. Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Grady Inman Sewell. Clay graduated from University of Georgia in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Terry College of Business. After college, he joined several of his Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers at Merrill Lynch, working with investments. He would go on to obtain his Certified Public Accounting license from Valdosta State University and enjoyed a long and successful accounting career. Clay was President of Sewell, Morgan and Hilliard, PC for over 14 years. Most recently, he was Senior Vice President of AMB Professional Group, LLC.
Clay happily married Carey Cofer Sewell on July 3, 1992, in Athens, Georgia. Devoted to his family and faith, Clay was a member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church and served on the vestry as both Senior and Junior Warden (he was proud to be instrumental in “getting softer pew cushions” installed). Clay sang in the All Saints’ choir for many years and adored seeing his children participate in church services as acolytes. He was involved in the community, serving on the boards of Thomasville Landmarks and Thomasville Center for the Arts. He loved being on the golf course with his friends. His golf group at Glen Arven Country Club has played at the same time each week for more than 20 years. Clay shared his passion for golf with his children, extended family, and lifelong friends. Playing golf with his friends and watching Georgia football with fellow fans were among Clay’s favorite activities. He was a regular and giving participant in Thomasville’s fundraisers and social functions, and he loved hosting dinner parties around his dining room table, providing good times and great memories for all.
Recognized as a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather and friend, Clay is survived by his wife, Carey Sewell of Thomasville; son, Michael Clay Sewell Jr., daughter-in-law, Callie and grandson, Michael Clay Sewell III (Trip) of Thomasville; son, Samuel Cofer Sewell of Thomasville; daughter, Caroline Carter Sewell of Atlanta; and his stepbrothers and sisters, Chandler and Laura Brown, Cindy and Hartley Stackhouse and Donna Brown. Clay was preceded in death by his stepbrother, Robert L. Brown Jr.
A private interment will take place at All Saints’ Episcopal Church’s Columbarium under the care of Allen & Allen Funeral Home. No memorial events are scheduled at this time due to health restrictions. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the All Saints’ ECW in support of local women and children.
