Charles Hall
Services for Charles Hall, 83, of Thomasville are at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 2, 2008, at Dawson Street Methodist Church. Mr. Hall passed away on Sept. 29 at his residence after a lengthy illness. Rev. Herbert Henderson and Rev. Ramon Hernandez will officiate and interment is in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be grandson, Rann Bryant, Michael Freeman, Christopher Hall, grandsons-in-law, Matt Burgess, Haynes Gentry, Warner May and Lee Ogletree. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Bible Class, Mr. James Logue, Mr. Frank Yauck and Mr. Bill Piland. Born in Tifton, Mr. Hall was the son of the late Charles J. and Bessie S. Hall. He served in World War II aboard the USS Rednour DE592 and the USS Greenwood DE679 as a Seaman First Class. He was a lifetime member of the National and the Georgia Destroyer Escort Sailor's Association and was a member of Dawson Street United Methodist Church Men's Bible Class. Mr. Hall served on the Administrative Board and was Superintendent of Sunday School in previous years. He worked in corn research at Greenwood Plantation and Seed Company where the introduction of southern germ plasm hybrid corn research and production began. The program was developed in conjunction with the Georgia Coastal Plain Agriculture Experiment Station and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That program was carried out by Mr. Hall who devoted 38 years to research and development of special southern corn hybrids. He was President and co-owner of Sunbelt Hybrids until 1989 when the company was sold. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Billie J. Waldrop Hall; four daughters and sons-in-law, Deede and Ed Freeman of Thomasville, Charlene and Larry Miller of Thomasville, Yvonne and Phil Youngblood of Valdosta, Kathy and Randy Bryant of Coolidge; two sons, Charles J. Hall of Tallahassee, Fla., Mark A. Hall of Thomasville; eleven grandchildren, Melissa May and husband, Warner of Atlanta, Michael J. Freeman of Thomasville, Holly Miller and husband, Haynes of Atlanta, Scott Youngblood and wife, Vanessa of Eugene, Oregon, Nicole Ogletree and husband, Lee of Milledgeville, Ashley and husband, Matt of Morven, Sara Bryant of Valdosta, Rann Bryant of Coolidge, Hannah Hall and Katie Hall of Tallahassee, Fla., Christopher Hall of Atlanta; two great great-grandchildren, Gaitlin and Grace Youngblood of Eugene Oregon. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Conger and Lillian Hall; four brothers, Julian, Huey, Bobby and Nicholas Hall.
