Alice Horne

Alice Johnson Horne, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on January 21, 2026, at the age of 98. She was born on September 12, 1927, in Ochlocknee, Georgia, to the late Mac Montgomery Bass and Ethel Parramore Bass.

Alice, affectionately known as Ms. Alice, was a proud, long-time member of Dawson Street Baptist Church and the last living 1948 charter member, where she served as a devoted Sunday school teacher for many years. Her contributions to the church extended beyond the classroom, as she also held the esteemed position of director for the Women's Missionary Union (WMU), embodying her commitment to serving others.

Her professional journey began as a part-time bookkeeper at Thomas County Federal, where her exemplary work and leadership skills propelled her to a 30-plus-year career, and she retired as Vice President. Alice made history as the first female member of the board of directors, breaking barriers for women in banking and inspiring future generations to reach for their dreams.

Survivors include her children, Stan Johnson of Iron City, Ga, Sue Johnson Hitt (Bill) of Calvary, Ga, and Monty Johnson (Donna Kay) of Thomasville; grandchildren, Ansley Johnson, Clarke Johnson, Allison Mallory-Luchini, Lane Johnson, and Reese Johnson, followed by 7 great-grandchildren.

Alice is preceded in death by her husbands, Wendell Lane Johnson and Julian Horne, and siblings Ralph Bass, Maggie Benton, Lila White, Oneita Bass Valkenburg, and Pauline Scully.

A service will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at Dawson Street Baptist Church at 3:00 pm with Pastor Lee Waller officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-3 pm prior to the service. Alice will be laid to rest at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ansley Johnson, Clarke Johnson, Russell Bass, Mark Smith, Bryant King, and Ike Carter.
