Services for Alice Elizabeth Medlock Wasden Mathews of Thomasville are at 2:00PM on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at First Baptist Church Chapel where she was a member. The Rev. Dr. Dan Spencer and Rev. Larry Harris will officiate and interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Mathews died December 13, 2005 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born June 16, 1918 in North Augusta, S.C. she was the daughter of the late Martin Medlock and Bessie Sussana Taylor Medlock. On March 27, 1942 she married Dr. Howell Anderson Wasden, Jr. who preceded her in death in 1961 and then in 1986 she married Grover Cleveland Jeff Mathews, Jr. who preceded her in death in 1989. Mrs. Mathews graduated from North Augusta South Carolina High School in 1935 and from the University Hospital School of Nursing in Augusta, GA in 1939. She was employed in the office of the Professor of Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia from 1939-1944. In 1946 she lived at Camp Polk, LA while her husband served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1947 they moved to Pavo, GA. She assisted her husband in his medical practice and the operation of Alice E. Wasden Hospital until his accidental death October 1961. Her service to the community of Pavo included membership and leadership positions in the Pavo Woman?s Club and Pavo School P. T. A. She was a member of Pavo Baptist Church for 50 years and was the church nursery director for over 25 years. She taught adult Sunday School for many years and was a member of the WMU. Mrs. Mathews was employed part time at Archbold Memorial Hospital from 1962-1964. She was an instructor of Practical Nursing for Thomas Area Technical School from 1964 until her retirement in 1980. She had also been a member of several educational and professional organizations. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Howell A. Wasden, III Andy and Janice L. Wasden of Warms Springs, GA, daughter and son-in-law, Carole Elizabeth Wasden Robinson and Len Robinson, daughter, Marjorie Anne Wasden Jinright Massey all of Thomasville; grandchildren, Allison Wasden, Capt. Patrick Wasden, USMC and wife, Jodi, Jennifer Blair Funderburk and husband, Darrell, Deanna Blair Copps and husband, Scott, Lenda Robinson Morris and husband, Kyle, Capt. Guyton Lee Robinson, US Army and wife, Heather, Charity Anne Jinright Lutes and husband, Marty, Henrietta Elizabeth Rhett Jinright; thirteen great grandchildren; brother, Harris Eugene Medlock and sister, Frances Medlock Chapman. She was preceded in death by a brother Martin Edward Medlock. Memorials may be made to Georgia Baptist Children?s Home, 9420 Blackshear Hwy., Baxley, GA 31513.
