Services for Alvin Richard Hughes, Sr. of Merrillville are at 11:00AM on Thursday, July 17, 2003 at Allen & Allen Funeral Chapel. Rev. Hugh Rockett, Rev. John Newsome and Rev. Carlton Webb will officiate and interment will be at Big Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers are David Murphy, Wesley Sauls, Edward Vonier, David Lewis, Bryan Cappilo, Derrick Barfield and honorary pallbearers are Richard Williams, Dr. Joe Rawlings, Pete Sherrod, Douglas Hicks, James Murphy, Jerry Edmonson and Paul Rehberg. Mr. Hughes died July 15, 2003 at his residence. Born March 28, 1946 in Pavo, GA., he was the son of the late Authur B. and Netta Mathis Hughes. On November 4, 1964 in Merriville, GA., he married Sue Shepard Hughes who survives. He was a member of Merrillville Baptist Church and a truck driver for 15 years at Kinro in Cairo, GA. Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Shonya and Jeff H. Shiver of Cordele, GA., son and daughter-in-law, Alvin R., Jr., and Brandi Hughes of Thomasville, daughter, Tracy Slayman,son, Marty Hughes both of St. Augustine, Fl.; grandchildren, Andrea Lynn Shiver and Marty Hughes, Jr. sister, Diane Hughes of St. Augustine; niece, Cindy Jefferson of Valdosta, GA., niece, Debra Riddle of St. Augustine; friend, Jerry Edmonson of Barney, GA.
