Alvin Fletcher Sam Kimbrough
Alvin Fletcher Sam Kimbrough, 90, of Thomasville, died peacefully at his residence Wednesday morning, July 17. A memorial service will be held Friday, July 19, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Milton Gardner and the Rev. Tom Jacobs officiating. Sam, as he was affectionately known, was born February 27, 1917 in Lumpkin, Georgia and was the oldest son of Hilda House Kimbrough and Troy Holder Kimbrough. He was a graduate of Thomasville High School and served in Japan during World War II after receiving his officer?s training at Fort Riley, Kansas. On August 6, 1939, he married his beloved wife, Adelle Godwin, who survives. He began working at Commercial Bank in its original location in Metcalf, Georgia in the early 1930?s and retired from his position as Senior Vice President of the bank in 1979. Mr. Kimbrough was instrumental in founding Thomasville Landmarks and Downtown Thomasville. He served as officer and board member of those and many other community and civic organizations. For numerous years he taught Sunday School in the Junior Department of First Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons and was honored with the Lifetime Deacon designation. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener. After retirement he enjoyed membership in Golden K and the Young at Heart of First Baptist Church. In addition to his wife of 68 years, Mr. Kimbrough is survived by his children, Virginia Norman of Thomasville, Al Kimbrough of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Anne and Paul Corbin of Pavo, and Jane and John Guy of Thomasville; his grandchildren, Jennifer and Allen Cummings of Canton, Georgia and Van and Julie Kimbrough of Kennesaw: two great grandchildren, Summer Sosebee and Camden Cummings of Canton; and two sisters, Mary Spivey of Hahira and Barbara Wallace of Dunwoody and devoted caregivers and friends, Glenda Wilcox, Cassandra Fredericks, April Sasser and Vera Williams. Brothers and sisters, B.J. Kimbrough, Troy Happy Kimbrough, Elizabeth Gandy, and Hilda Kimbrough preceded him in death.
