Services for Annie Laura Chastain of Ochlocknee will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2006, at 11 a.m. Internment will follow at the Ochlocknee Cemetery. The church elders will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Chastain was with her family when she died July 30 at her apartment at the Suites of Woodleaf in Thomasville. She was born in Ochlocknee Nov. 1, 1909, the daughter of the late Joseph Iowa Dixon and Ethel Carter Dixon. She was the co-owner of Chastain?s Grocery with her husband, the late John Rainey Chastain. They were married on September 1, 1928, and she was his devoted wife for 55 years. The Chastains opened their store on Main Street in Ochlocknee in 1936 which they ran for almost 35 years, greeting each customer with a smile.
In 2002, the town she served and loved made her the honorary grand marshal of its annual Old South Parade. Mrs. Chastain was a graduate of Ochlocknee Consolidated School. She was an active member of the Ochlocknee Baptist Church and sang in the choir until she was 91 years of age. She was a member of the Ochlocknee-Meggs Luncheon Club and the Ochlocknee Reunion Club.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Van Vanderberg of Orlando, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Jane Chastain of Aguanga, Calif.; grandchildren, Charles Stewart and wife Kathie Hess of Boston, Mass.; Joni Brown Wolfe and husband Bill of Orlando, Fla. and Blayne Chastain and wife Deborah of Greeley, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Langdon and Logan Brown and Cameron Stewart; sister Eva Smith of North, S. C.; brothers, Joseph T. Dixon of James Island, S.C.; John Wesley Dixon of North Charleston, S.C. and Jack Dixon and wife Sue of Murphy, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 2, at the funeral home. Allen & Allen Funeral Home.
