After a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, Arthur Raymond Carlson died peacefully in his Thomasville, Georgia home on August 8, 2018 at the age of 77.
Arthur is survived by his loving wife, Susan Kennington Carlson of 54 years, granddaughter, Courtney Murray, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and daughter, Stephanie Carlson Murray.
Arthur was born on December 20, 1940 in Minneapolis, MN to Arthur and Katherine Carlson. He graduated from The University of Minnesota with both a bachelors and masters in Business. On August 8, 1964, Arthur married Susan Kennington Carlson, of Thomasville, GA, and continued his education in the University of Michigan’s doctoral program. The couple remained in Michigan where Arthur began his financial career in the Investment Management Sector of Prudential Financial, Inc. They welcomed their daughter, Stephanie, into their home in 1966 and later moved to New Jersey where Arthur continued his work with Prudential. There, his greatest achievement was his contribution in the funding of the Alaskan Pipeline.
In 1982, Arthur and Susan moved their family to Pasadena, CA when Arthur joined TCW (then Trust Company of the West) as a Managing Director to structure and manage energy project finance investments. He was one of the early forces behind TCW’s build-out of a successful alternative investing platform. Over his years at TCW, he launched ten oil, gas, and power funds, bringing the advantages of energy investing to pension funds, endowments, foundations, and other clients around the world. He was one of the true pioneers in what is now a ubiquitous sector. Those who knew Arthur during these days would agree that he was known not only as an outstanding investor but also as a true gentleman. In addition to his investing expertise, Arthur had a great philanthropic heart. While at the company, he founded and funded a need-based educational scholarship foundation for the children of TCW employees and supported his longtime assistant in her senior care center until her passing. Arthur was one the early contributors to TCW’s great success.
After retirement Arthur joined his family in Thomasville, GA, and continued to support and guide various companies through his board memberships. Aside from work, Arthur’s passions were the great outdoors, fine wine, and traveling the world with his family and friends.
