Arthur Lee Strickland
Arthur Lee Strickland of Boston died Friday, March 18 at Archbold Hospital. Born December 3, 1917 in Youngstown, OH, Mr. Strickland attended Purdue University prior to joining the Air Force during World War II; he served for six years in Greenland. After the war, he lived in Nashville, TN where he was a weatherman on WSM-TV and worked for American Airlines. Later he attended New York University where he graduated as a meteorologist. He was an early employee for National Airlines when it was formed in New York and he worked there as a meteorologist and dispatcher. Mr. Strickland continued in this capacity after the company was bought by PanAmerican Airlines, retiring in the early 1980?s as a senior officer in Operations.
In his youth, Mr. Strickland had been a Boy Scout. As a college student, he was a member of Delta Epsilon Fraternity. In addition to his interest in climate, he volunteered in various youth groups as a leader/teacher in outdoor activities and wildlife.
Mr. Strickland and Pat, his wife of 20 years, moved to Boston in 1990 after spending several years at their homes in Florida and North Carolina. In addition to Pat, he is survived by four sons: Lee and wife Madeline of Great Neck, NY; Robert and wife Christine of Elgin, IL; Daniel of Ft. Worth, TX; George and wife Sue of Sarasota, FL. He also had two stepchildren: Sandi Shaw and husband Mark Anderson of Kansas City, MO and Lance Whidden of Dallas, TX. His grandchildren include Sally Strickland of Elgin IL; Kira and Paul Strickland of Ft. Worth, TX; Mathew and Summer Strickland of Sarasota, FL; step-grandsons Patrick and Michael Shaw of Pensacola, FL. Three brothers survive: Earl of Huntsville, AL, Leonard and wife Jane of Red Ford, MI and Paul and wife Myrna of Dunnsville, VA. Other survivors include nieces and nephews.
Mr. Strickland was a member of Unitarian Universalist Church, Deland, FL fellowship. His remains have been cremated and a private memorial service will be held at his residence Sunday, March 20, 2005 at 1:00PM.
