Barbara Dollar Hurst

August 14, 1937 — February 8, 2024

Barbara Ellen Dollar Hurst, 86, of Thomasville, Georgia passed away peacefully on February 8, 2024 at her home surrounded by her beloved family.

Barbara was born in Pavo, Georgia on August 14, 1937 to Mae Toole and Jessie Warner Dollar, Sr. In 1955, Barbara married Harold Jessie Hurst, who preceded her in death in 2015. Together, they raised a beautiful family in Metcalfe, Georgia, and made many cherished memories. Barbara was a devoted mother to Beth Head (Kenny) of Rome, Georgia; Kay Edelen of Thomasville; and David Allen, who also predeceased her in 2007. Barbara then became a loving grandmother to Ashley Eubanks, Scott Eubanks, Michael Edelen, Kate Edelen, Jordon Hurst, and her step-grandchild Kathryn Claytor. She was later blessed with three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Barbara was preceded in death by her brothers: Warner, Joe, and John Ellis Dollar, as well as by her sister-in-law Laura Dollar and nephew, Matt Dollar.

Barbara was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she was the pianist for over thirty years. Outside of the church, she was a hard-working woman who adored children, devoting 35 years of her professional career to driving the school bus for the Thomas County School System, where she was known for her "no-nonsense" policy (but she loved every minute of it!)

Later in life, Barbara enjoyed rewarding work as a paraprofessional for children with special needs. Barbara had a well-rounded life, participating in many hobbies throughout the years including ceramics, sewing, reading, and above all, shopping (something her husband was not as fond of!).

Barbara had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed a life full of travel with her husband, family, and friends. Even at 80 years old, Barbara did not let her age stop her from venturing to Scotland with her beloved friend, Barbara Dixon, in the summer of 2018.

She is survived by her younger brothers, Dr. James Dollar (Jimmy) and Stanley Dollar (Beverly); sister-in-law Melba Dollar; nieces Lynne Dollar, Sandy Williams, Katie Morello, Jessica Taylor and Stephanie Dangler; and nephew Terry White; as well as several other great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her special friends, Francis Watson and Judy King.

Barbara lived a full life in faith and love, and never ceased to amuse her friends and family with her keen sense of humor. She will be missed dearly and cherished forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Her visitation will be held at Allen and Allen Funeral Home on Monday, February 12th from 5-7pm. The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 13th at 11am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Remington Avenue with graveside service to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
