Funeral services for Bertie Distelhurst will be held at 2:00PM, on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at First Baptist Church Chapel. Bertie Distelhurst, age 98, a beloved resident of Thomasville, Ga., passed away on February 18th, 2016.
"Ms. D", as she was famously known, as a well-loved office manager at Thomasville H.S., was a loyal friend and mentor to so many in Thomasville.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, and great-grand daughter, Everly Hope. Bertie is survived by her daughters: Sarah Going of Louisville, KY, and Julia Distelhurst of Berkeley Lake, Ga., five grandchildren: John Going (Compton) of Charlottesville, Va., Mike Going (Mary-Ellen) of St. Louis, MO., Brooke Menoni (Dave) of Westport, CT., Josh Hunter (Ginny) of San Diego, CA., Cameron Hunter (Sharon) of Boulder, CO., and by her great-grandchildren: Hermione & Sarah of Charlottesville, VA., Genevieve & Oliver of St Louis, MO., Hunter, Emerson, Cash & Dekker of Westport, CT., Sienna & Luca of Boulder, CO.
Ms. Distelhurst was also a prestigious member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Caroline Brevard chapter), a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (Anna Jackson chapter), the Georgia Federation of Women's Club and Briarcliff Garden Club. She volunteered as a Pink Lady through the auxiliary at the Archbold Memorial Hospital.
A fond memory for her grandchildren will be the many stories she told about she and John (her late husband) popping popcorn, going to the practices of the 1940s New York Yankees and sharing their popcorn with Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio and Babe Ruth, and having a picture made with Babe Ruth.
Bertie, "Ms. D", Mema will best be remembered for her fondness of pets, and chocolate, but above all else, for her deep, and devoted faith in Christ. The family will receive friends Friday, February 26, 2016, 5PM until 7PM at the funeral home. Guests may sign the online register at
