Bonnie Curtis Sherman entered her eternal life on February 20, 2023 after a long fight with Alzheimers. Her spirit is carried on by her two children, four granddaughters, two surviving siblings, nieces, nephew, and numerous family members and friends from every walk of life. There is no doubt, to know Bonnie was to love Bonnie.
She was born a war baby on November 28, 1942, in Atlanta Georgia to Lorane Harrell Curtis and Arthur C. Curtis, Jr. soon to follow would be her sister Betty Strom and baby brother Arthur C. Curtis, III (affectionately renamed "Ricky" by his sisters). Looking at her childhood through photos is nostalgic magic, her days were filled with carefree adventures with cousins and siblings. She often said, "If the doors to the Baptist Church were open, we were there". Living in a small house across from Norman College in Norman Park Georgia her teenage years were filled with joyrides to Moultrie, dresses with crinolines, water skiing, filling her Coca Colas with peanuts and charging Reese Cups to her Daddy's running ticket at the Suwanee store. She lived the childhood of riding bikes, shelling peas, dirt roads, and endless summer days. Her colorful childhood stories are endless. She managed to be the toughest ball player, most graceful dancer, prettiest girl in the room, and she packed a mean right hook. Later she attended ABAC where she met and married Martin Shepherd and they relocated to UGA. Several years later two children came from this union Martin Shepherd, Jr. (Davida) and Amy Shepherd Cook (Tommy).
Bonnie's many adventures at work included founding Athens Hair Fashions in the 1960's, Glen Arven food and hospitality manager, gifts and catering enterprise Goody Goody, and part-owner and director of Alexander Termite & Pest Control Company. She enjoyed working with people as much as playing. There really wasn't much she couldn't do, and if she didn't know how to do it, she could surely convince you to do it for her. Through the years she championed the sports of Golf and Tennis. A few holes-in-one on her scorecard and a case full of trophies will surely get one's attention. Bonnie's children and grandchildren would tell you she was always humble in her victories and had the proper perspective on her losses - even though she hated to lose! In short, she would teach that the qualities of making a good person are the same ones that make a great sportsman. She would say, "If you really want to know someone, play a round of golf with them and you'll know all you need to know".
On any given day you would see Bonnie heading to yoga at the YMCA, playing bridge with her closest friends, arranging a round of golf at Glen Arven or whipping up some of her famous chocolate sauce just because she had a hankering. If you were lucky, she would share with you some of her delicious chocolate chip cookies, and if you were even luckier, she'd tell you the recipe.
Sadly, Bonnie's memories of us faded in recent years, but our memories of her are strong and everlasting. Her granddaughters will forever cherish the moments of playing slap Jack, baking cookies, golfing, and simply making things fabulous. A gracious plenty is what comes to mind when reflecting on Bonnie's life...days filled with doing the things she loved, an abundance of friends, and a family that loved her endlessly.
She will be forever remembered for her beautiful smile, vivacious personality and her incredible sense of style. She was truly one of a kind and will be forever timeless.
A graveside service will be held where she will be laid to rest with her mother and father at 11AM on Friday, February 24th, 2023, at Deep Bottom Cemetery in Norman Park, Georgia.
