Catherine Lea Sampson, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on May 11, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on October 8, 1952, in Thomasville, Georgia, she spent her life in the community she cherished. Lea was the daughter of the late Raymond and Ruth Willett.
A proud graduate of Central High School, Class of 1970, Lea was known for her spirited nature and strong sense of community. She organized monthly potlucks for her high school classmates and was a lifelong member of the First Methodist Church. Her vibrant personality shone through in her many passions, including golfing at Country Oaks- where she famously donned her rain boots- and volunteering at the local county school, where she delighted children by making snow cones.
Lea lived life to the fullest. She loved fishing, gardening, and mowing grass, embracing her free-spirited hippie heart while enjoying the sounds of 70s music. An exceptional cook, she was celebrated for her delicious cube steak and homemade chocolate cake and her love for animals. For decades, she coached soccer at the YMCA and for TASA, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless young athletes.
Lea was known for marching to the beat of her own drum, often seen in her favorite blue jeans and boots, always willing to lend a helping hand.
Survivors include her children, Danielle Sampson Smith (Josh) of Thomasville and Matt Sampson (Kelsey Sharpe) of Thomasville; grandchildren, Landon Sampson, Rhett Smith, Indy Sampson, and Eli Sampson; siblings Marty Willett, Deane Williams (Mike), and Clay Willett; boyfriend Kenny McVay and her loving dog, Bear.
Lea is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Stamat Corky Sampson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on May 16, 2026, at the First Methodist Church with pastor Scott Stanfill officiating. Pallbearers are Wes Sampson, Josh Willett, Thomas Williams, Ryan Jones, Lee McVay, and Cooper Williams. Honorary pallbearers are Gene Sampson, Ken Coram, Josiah Willett, and Jerry Massey. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Friday, May 15, 2026 at Allen & Allen Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at Lea's home after the service. Food and drinks will be provided and all friends, family, and loved ones are invited. Lea will be laid to rest at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Thomasville Humane Society, 180 Big Star Dr, Thomasville, GA 31757.
