CATHRYN SNELLINGS PINSON WILDS

Funeral services celebrating the life and accomplishments for CATHRYN SNELLINGS PINSON WILDS, 90, of Augusta, GA and Thomasville, GA., are at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday April 18th at First Church Baptist Church in Augusta. Interment will follow the services at Westover Cemetery. Dr. C. Gregory DeLoach will officiate. Mrs. Wilds succumbed peacefully on Saturday, April 14th , 2007, at Southern Pines Retirement Community in Thomasville, where she lived for the past eight years. She was stricken with Alzheimer?s disease during her later years in life. She moved to Thomasville in 1998 to be closer to her daughter as she struggled with this illness.

Born in Hartwell, Georgia, May 23, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Albert Enoch Snellings. She is preceded in death by husbands, Raymond Earl Pinson, Sr. and Louis T. Wilds III.

A wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Mrs. Wilds was always impeccably groomed and was the epitome of a lady with a ready smile and a gentle demeanor.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Augusta for more than fifty years, and became a member of the First Baptist Church in Thomasville in 1999.

She was graduated from Tift College in 1935 and served as an educator in the Central Savannah River Area for more than a half century. As a teacher in the Richmond County Public School System in Augusta, Mrs. Wilds was often hailed as having had great influence over the lives of both students and teachers because of her dynamic personality and her innate ability to bring knowledge and culture to reluctant students.

At the age of 63, Mrs. Wilds came out of retirement because she was needed in the classroom. For the next six years she enjoyed her ultimate teaching experience as she raised the level of literary consciousness at Briarwood Academy - just outside of Augusta in Warrenton, Georgia.

In recognition of the outstanding accomplishments of the literary awards on both regional and state levels at Briarwood, the Board of Trustees established on May 21, 1987 an award honoring her dedication to planting the ?seeds of challenge? in the minds of the students. The Cathryn Pinson Award for Literary Achievement is given annually to the most outstanding male and female literary students at Briarwood Academy.

Mrs. Wilds was the recipient of many awards, including one of America?s Outstanding Elementary Teachers in 1974.

A master of the literary arts, Mrs. Wilds is remembered as a role model, a lasting inspiration, a profound influence, a tenacious motivator, a dedicated teacher and trusted friend. She was understanding, enthusiastic, and encouraging as she challenged her students to rise above mediocrity and to achieve their highest goals.

This family matriarch left her mark on the minds of many, as she touched the lives of many. Her guide for a successful life came from Proverbs 22:6, ?Train a child
in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.?

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond Earl, Jr. and Linda Pinson of Saint Simons Island, GA; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy Pinson Mooney and Richard Mooney III of Thomasville, Georgia; grandchildren, Joshua Enoch and wife, Courtney Pinson of Augusta, Leah Ashley Pinson of Augusta, Mary-Cathryn Pinson Mooney of New York, New York, and Richard Gordon Mooney IV of Atlanta; and great grandchildren, Caroline Pinson, Bates Pinson, Davis Pinson and Anne Cathryn Pinson, all of Augusta.
