Graveside services for retired insurance executive, Charles H. "Charley" Beene, 89, of Thomasville will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday January 26, 2011 at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Louisiana Street in Thomasville. Born September 21, 1921 in Hazelgreen, Alabama, he was the son of the late Charles Brantsford Beene and Emma Josephine Culpepper Beene. Charley was educated in schools in Starkville, MS, and at Mississippi State University. A highly decorated Army Air Force officer in World War II, Mr. Beene completed 35 missions as a bombardier in B-17s with the 8th Air Force in Europe. He received two bronze stars during his service. He later served with the Strategic Air Command during the Korean War. Mr. Beene entered the life insurance business with Liberty National in 1948 and worked in a management capacity from 1949 until his retirement in 1985. He was president of the local Life Underwriter's Association in 1968 and state vice president in 1969. Mr. Beene was the first person in Thomas County to receive the professional insurance designation of Chartered Life Underwriter. Very active in civic affairs, Charley was president of the Kiwanis Club and president of the Thomasville Touchdown Club in 1972. He served as chairman of the city school board in 1973 and 1974. He also served as a trustee of Thomas College, treasurer of the Friends of the Library, and chairman of the board of Tax Equalization. He was inducted into the Thomasville-Thomas County Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. Mr. Beene was a member of the Church of Christ and is survived by his wife, Mildred Ruth Hawkins Beene, two children, Brant Beene and wife Celia of Birmingham, AL and Beth Hester and husband Philip of Gainesville, GA, along with six grandchildren, Charley, Billy and Libby Beene, and Whitney, J. Philip, and Ford Hester. Memorial contributions may be made to Thomasville – Thomas County Sports Hall of Fame, 103 South Dawson St, Thomasville, Ga 31799. The family will receive friends, 6-8 pm, Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Allen & Allen Funeral Home. Guests may sign the online guest register at www.allenfh.com
