CHARLES IRVIN HANCOCK

Charles Irvin Hancock, MD passed away at his home peacefully on Sunday, February 1, 2015. He was born September 25, 1931 in Thomasville, Georgia to Boyd Emerson and Cora Williams Hancock and attended local schools graduating from Thomasville High School in 1949. Next he moved to Jacksonville to live with an aunt and began work at the Federal Reserve Bank. There, he joined the Naval Reserve and was activated during the Korean conflict. He spent three years in the U.S. Navy serving as a quartermaster on numerous aircraft carriers.
After he was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1953, he attended Georgia Tech under the G.I. Bill receiving a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1956. While in Atlanta, he met Martha Tatum from Lagrange, GA, a nurse at Georgia Baptist Hospital. They married in 1954. Upon finishing his degree at Georgia Tech, the young couple moved to Melbourne, Florida where he took a job with Radiation Inc.
He was inspired by his wife Martha to pursue a career in Medicine and attended the Medical College of Georgia, graduating in 1963. Following an Internship in Augusta, he was one of the first residents in Orthopedic Surgery at Georgia Baptist Hospital and Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, Atlanta. Upon completion of his orthopedic residency, he went into private practice at Georgia Baptist Hospital joining the Atlanta Orthopedic Clinic in 1968. He remained there in practice until his retirement in 1992 when he became the medical director of the Georgia Baptist Medical Center. He also served as an instructor of residents in training at the Georgia Baptist and Scottish Rite residency program.
Each month for 26 years, he travelled from Atlanta to run a Crippled Children's clinic in Thomasville, assisted by the Junior Service League of Thomasville. He and Martha were members of the First Baptist Church of Thomasville. He is survived by his loving wife Martha, of 60 years; son Charles E. Hancock (Andrea) of Thomasville; daughter Nancy Warren (Chuck) of Atlanta; son Robert E. Hancock (Terri) of Athens; son James E. Hancock of Atlanta; sisters Sarah Huddleston and Rose Glebus; and, eight grandchildren. Professionally, he was a Member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, Michael Hoke Society, and the Georgia Orthopaedic SocietyAlso of note, He received the Thomas County Chamber of Commerce Humanitarian Award in 1992. He served in multiple missionary capacities in Alaska, Russia, and China. He was elected to the Engineering Hall of Fame at Georgia Tech. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. His many hobbies included spending time with his family, hunting, farming, and word-working. Arrangements are as follows, Visitation Tuesday from 5-7 PM at Allen and Allen Funeral Home, Service Wednesday at First Baptist Thomasville at 11:00 AM.
