Graveside services for Charles Humphrey Dewell, 82, of Thomasville, are at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 29, 2010 in Laurel Hill Cemetery on Virginia Street. Father Jacek Szuster will officiate. Mr. Dewell passed away July 27 at his residence. Born, July 30, 1927, in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of the late Dudley P. and Frances Dewell. He was married to Helen Dewell who preceded him in death in February of 2007. He was a graduate of the University of Florida with a BA Degree in business administration. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, where he served in WWII and the Korean War. He was awarded the UN medal, Korean Ribbon and the WWII Victory medal. He was a civil servant for the Social Security Administration until retirement in 1980. He was a former member of the Lions Club. He loved to sew and cut hair. He would cut his children's hair on a regular basis. He also worked at the County Public Library, where he made many friends. He contributed to many organizations including the Humane Society, Salvation Army, Senior Citizen's Center, Foreign Veteran's Administration and the National Wildlife Association. Survivors include children, Janet Collins of Thomasville, Karen D. Warmack and husband, Tracy of Coolidge, Robert G. Dewell and wife, Jennifer of Thomasville, Kevin Dewell and wife, Judy of Coolidge, Lori Criswell of Thomasville, Eric Dewell of Thomasville, Allison Dewell of Thomasville and David Dewell and wife, Debbie of Tallahassee, Fla.; grandchildren, Joshua Warmack, Nathan and Adrianne Jenkins, Amber and Chris Rahn, Kristina and Robbie Gilliard, Jennifer Bell, Beth Lewis, Jonathan and Mandy Criswell, Isabella Dewell and Samuel Dewell; great-grandchildren, Jensen Rahn and Cameron Criswell. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Collins; brother, Gordon Dewell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA., 22116-7023. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitors may sign the online guest register at www.allenfh.com .
