Charles H "Charlie" Mathers, 79, died May 9 at Archbold Hospice, Thomasville, GA (where he had recently moved) of injuries from a recent fall. He was predeceased by his wife, Sandra Hamilton Mathers. Survivors include his life partner, Donna Johnson; sister Robin Mello of Centerville, KY; brother, Michael Mathers of Ajijic, Mexico; Ex-wife Marny H Von Horten of Port Royal, SC, and his beloved canine, Buddy. Charlie was an army veteran, serving 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, Germany, Colorado, and Washington DC, and was a Purple Heart recipient. A graduate of GA State University, he worked in computers for several companies, retiring as a database administrator from Norfolk Southern in 2013. A man of many interests, he was a member and deacon of Shallowford Presbyterian Church; congregant of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Decatur GA, and Holy Nativity Church, Saint Simons, GA; a bass with the Michael O'Neal Singers (MOS), Roswell, GA; volunteer with Living Waters for the World (livingwatersfortheworld.org); Habitat for Humanity; Hospice of the Golden Isles and Archbold Hospice. He is remembered as Santa Claus by hundreds of kids of all ages. He loved camping, hiking, sailing, seashores, mountains, redwoods, and National Parks.
