Charles D Phillips

February 24, 1948 — November 9, 2020

Charles Dewey Phillips of Whigham went to be with the Lord on November 9, 2020 following a lengthy illness. He was born on February 24, 1948 in Thomasville to the late Charlie Justin and Hazel Rae Miller Phillips. He graduated from Cairo High School and attended trade school in Jacksonville before becoming a welder and businessman. He was a man of Christian faith and a member of Climax Baptist Church.

In 1996, after years of cardiac issues, he received the heart of a 32 year old wife and mother of young children. At 24 years, Charles was among the longest living heart transplant recipients in Georgia and the US.

Charles was a kind, gentle man who, as a single father, worked hard to give his sons every opportunity. He was known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help anyone in need. He had the "gift of gab" and was known for telling long stories to everyone he met. He also served his community by coaching youth sports in Grady County. Charles enjoyed working on boats with his closest friend Tommy and loved to go deep sea fishing, especially in Hawaii. He also loved his dog "Munch" who was with him for almost 15 years.

Survivors include his children, Brandon Clay Phillips, of Whigham, GA, Charles Tyler Phillips of Whigham, GA; grandchildren, Cohen Phillips, Hazel Winifred Phillips; sister-in-law, Pam Long Phillips. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Durwood Edwin Phillips.
