Charlie W. Lawhorn, 85, born April 16, 1938 in Grady County and a resident of Thomasville, GA, passed away on October 18, 2023 at The Residence of Oak Grove.
Charlie served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army from 1955 to 1958.
In his earlier years, Charlie found solace in the simple joys of life, whether fishing, cooking, or watching his grandchildren from the comfort of his porch - especially when they were doing the yard work he preferred to avoid. He had a knack for wheeling and dealing, often indulging in buying and reselling various items. Charlie adored his wife Jeannette and her cooking. After her passing, he would recreate some of her recipes. His grandchildren especially enjoyed his delicious pound cake and banana pudding he lovingly prepared for them during the holidays. Charlie also developed a soft spot for animals, especially his dogs Pumpkin and Peanut, who brought him much joy.
In his later years, one of his favorite pastimes was driving to the airport and watching the airplanes take off. Charlie found joy in embarking on road trips in his bright yellow Ford Ranger, revisiting the places of his youth and exploring new locations. In his final year at The Residence of Oak Grove Assisted Living they provided him with a welcoming community of friends and great food; a place he called home. Our family is deeply thankful for the support provided by the staff and residents during his time there.
Charlie was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Jeannette Beverly Lawhorn; his parents, L.Z. and Mattie (Dismuke) Lawhorn; brother, Clyde Lawhorn; and sister, Jean Lawhorn.
Charlie is survived by his loving children, Shelia Sampson and Tommy Lawhorn (Kathy). His legacy continues through his grandchildren Jennifer Sampson, Christen Lawhorn Hughes (Christopher), Michael Lawhorn, Grant Lawhorn (Lisa), Wesley Sampson, Amanda Lawhorn Marshall (Dustin), and Kirby Lawhorn Coleman (Eli), as well as his six great-grandchildren, all of whom affectionately called him Papa. Charlie is survived by his sister Nita Zipper; brother-in-law, Allen Beverly and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charlie will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Allen and Allen Funeral Home in Thomasville, Georgia at 10:00am on Saturday, October 28, 2023. A graveside service at 11am will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Thomasville, GA where his ashes will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Residence of Oak Grove Thomasville, GA in Charley's memory to be used for activities for the residents and staff who brought joy to his life.
