Christine Williams Cherry, 72, died on June 28, 2021 at her home in Thomasville, Georgia.
Chris was born on September 10, 1948 in Raleigh to Ray and Frances Williams.
She graduated from Broughton High School, attended St. Mary's College and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in Education. In 1969 she married her high school sweetheart, Van Cherry. Van enlisted in the Army and the two of them traveled for several years living in Columbus, GA, and then Fayetteville. They returned to Raleigh where Chris taught at North Ridge Elementary until the birth of her daughter, Beth. She stayed home for several years but returned to teaching, this time at Frances Lacy Elementary where she taught fifth grade for 20 years.
Her long-awaited retirement began in 2008. She enjoyed outings and adventures with her friend, Patricia Koontz, and her "girl group." Travels with her sister were especially fun. She went frequently to Atlanta to visit her daughter and her beloved grandsons.
In November 2020 she moved to be near her daughter, son-in-law and grandsons, in South Georgia.
Chris was passionate about American history, North Carolina lighthouses, her annual Kentucky Derby party, and all things related to the celebration of Christmas. Chris loved the beach, the North Carolina mountains and touring historic sites in the state. She was a loving and devoted sister, mother, grandmother and friend.
She is survived by her sister and her husband, Marsha and Ed Mills of Fairview, North Carolina; her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Sam Atchison of Camilla, Georgia; and 2 grandsons, Brody and Mitchell Atchison.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Van Cherry.
A funeral service is planned for July 7 at White Memorial Presbyterian Church,1704 Oberlin Rd, Raleigh, NC 27608, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Raleigh Rescue Mission or the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
