Cornelia Louisa Mires Tomlinson
A memorial service for Cornelia Louisa Mires Tomlinson will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008, at First United Methodist Church of Thomasville A private graveside service will be held. Dr. Weyman Cleveland will officiate. Mrs. Tomlinson, called Corrie by her family and friends, died on Tuesday, July 15th. She was born on August 9, 1918 in Volusia County, Florida, the second daughter of John Jefferson and Frances Martin Mires. She grew up in Deland, Florida where she graduated from Deland High School as valedictorian of her class. She attended Stetson University in Deland, Florida, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, the Stetson Glee Club and Stetson University symphony orchestra. It was at Stetson that she met her future husband, Harry Ethridge Tomlinson, of Madison, Florida. They were married on October 12, 1940. Soon thereafter they moved to Bar M Ranch in southeast Thomas County where they resided until moving to Thomasville in 1960. Mrs. Tomlinson was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Thomasville, Ga., for over fifty years and served as a charter member of the Altar Guild, a long-time member of the choir, a member of the United Methodist Women, the Sue McTier Sunday School Class, the Administrative Board, a circle leader and a Trustee. She was a member of Thomasville Entertainment Foundation, The Cultural Center, Thomasville Landmarks, Thomas County Historical Society, Archbold Hospital volunteer and an early member of Thomasville Garden Club, Inc. She was an avid reader, loved flower arranging and sewing for her family. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Harry Ethridge Tomlinson, their five children: sons, Harry Mires Tomlinson and wife Mary, of Thomasville and Carl Martin Tomlinson of Tallahassee, Florida. Daughters; Ashley Tomlinson Jones of Thomasville, Leisa Tomlinson Zoller and husband Jeffrey, of Winchester, Virginia and Dorian Tomlinson Blackmon and husband John, of Thomasville; five grandchildren: Harry Mires Tomlinson, Jr. and wife Shannon of Jupiter, Florida, Barbara Cornell Tomlinson of Tallahassee, Florida, Griffin Jones of Chicago, Illinois, Laura Zoller Rieck and husband J.T. of Houston, Texas, Kari Zoller of Winchester, Virginia; four great grandchildren, Kate, Brenna and Kara Tomlinson, Jupiter, Florida, Bryce Cornell Rieck, Houston, Texas; four step grandchildren, Scott Reese, Tallahassee, Florida, Beverly Reese Gray and husband Arthur, Hoboken, New Jersey, Elizabeth Blackmon Birmingham, Alabama, John Blackmon II, Thomasville; two step great grandchildren, Reagan and Emily Blackmon, Thomasville; three sisters, Mrs. J. Wesley Fly, Orlando, Florida, Mrs. Neil MacMillan, Delray Beach, Florida, Mrs. Jocelyn Mires Wimer Deland, Florida and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to First United Methodist Church , p.o. box 975, Thomasville, Ga 31799 or Hospice of Southwest Georgia, 818 Gordan Ave, Thomasville, Ga 31792.
