David always wanted his obituary to say only, “I died.” His family has decided to say a little more.
David Benton Matthews of Thomasville, GA, born on November 15, 1945 in Moore County, NC to Joshua David Matthews and Anna Pearl Blue Matthews (both deceased), passed away on Jan 9, 2021 due to CoVid related illness. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan James Matthews, and his siblings Beverly Matthews McDonald of Thomasville, GA and Victor Matthews of Thomasville, GA. He is also survived by his children, Stephanie Matthews Straub (Nathan) of Pensacola, FL, Sara Kathryn Matthews Tully (Greg) of Sykesville, MD, Monica Sue Homesley Harper (Gene) of Thomasville, GA, Timothy Paul Homesley (Nicole) of Coolidge, GA, and Kimberly Ilene Homesley Anglin (Brian) of Boston, GA, as well as Grandchildren Nora Kathryn Straub; Charlotte, Michael, & Gabriel Tully; Sarah Marie, Simon, & Isabelle Harper; Trey, Elizabeth, & Erin Homesley; and Corbitt, Briana, and Zoie Anglin.
David graduated from Thomasville High School in 1964, attended Thomasville Technical School for a Drafting Degree, then worked for Moore Business Firms before enlisting in the Army. David served as a Black Beret during the Vietnam War, from 1969-1970. After returning from Vietnam, David worked alongside his father at Matthews Truck Brokerage and attended many Scottish Highland Games in North Carolina to celebrate his Scottish Heritage. David, his father, and his siblings later entered into a successful, produce farming business which they operated for decades in Thomasville, GA. David was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he enjoyed driving his race car in competitions around the south.
David will be dearly missed by his loved ones. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mission 22, an organization dedicated to helping military veterans get treatment for post-traumatic stress.
