Donald M. Mathis

Donald M. Mathis, 68 of Cairo passed away February 19, 2015 at Grady General Hospital. Born April 28, 1946 in Cairo, he was the son of the late Melton Mathis and Callie Palmer Mathis. He was married to Laura Carroll Mathis, who survives. Mr. Mathis was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he received the National defense Service Medal, a Sharpshooter Badge, a Marksmanship Badge and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. And he was a member of the American Legion Post in Cairo. He had a heart of gold and enjoyed helping people, being with friends and family and dancing. Other survivors include his son, Donnie Ray Mathis and step-daughter, Tonya Sandler; brothers and sisters, Doris Williamson, Charles Mathis, Mattie Minchew, William Mathis, Dennis Mathis, James Mathis and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, Wyndell Mathis and sister, Barbara Mathis. Private services will be held by the family.
