Doris Faircloth

November 8, 1921 — March 7, 2021

A service celebrating the life of Doris Carolyn Henderson Faircloth will be at Dawson Street Baptist Church at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 13, 2021. Mrs. Faircloth died peacefully at her home on Sunday, March 7, 2021.

Born November 8, 1921 in Elbert County GA, to Lloyd Pinkney Henderson and Lila Pearl Haynie Henderson, Doris Faircloth grew up in Thomson where she was a member of the Thomson High School Class of 1939. After graduation, Mrs. Faircloth moved to Brunswick GA where she worked as an award-winning welder with the J.A. Jones Construction Company, a shipyard company building Liberty Ships for the WW II effort. There, she met John Thomas Faircloth from Mitchell County, Georgia, who was also employed at the shipyard. After an eight-month courtship, they were married on November 3, 1944, at the First Baptist Church in Brunswick, GA. The next day, Mr. Faircloth brought his new wife to Thomasville where he had accepted a position with a food distribution company. For more than 72 years, they made their home and reared their family in this community.

Mrs. Faircloth and her husband were charter members of both Dawson Street Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church. They were active in all areas of church life in both congregations. She was a member of Victory Sunday School Class and the Woman’s Missionary Union. She was a leader in Vacation Bible Schools, and taught children in Sunday School, Training Union and Girls Auxiliary for over fifty years. She was a life-long member of the Thomasville Camp of Gideons International Auxiliary and was supportive of her husband’s work in the collection and distribution of Bibles in the area.

Mrs. Faircloth worked in alterations at Neel’s Department Store and Friedlander’s in downtown Thomasville. She retired from Southwestern State Hospital. She was a past member of the Briarcliff Garden Club and also the former Thomas County Home Demonstration Club. She especially enjoyed making twelve-layer chocolate cakes for church dinners, family reunions and her grandchildren.

Mrs. Faircloth lived a life dedicated to faith and family. She is survived by daughter, Faye (Kenneth) Smith of Milton FL; grandchildren Kristin R. Snead of Dixie GA, David (Jodi) Smith of Milton FL, Amanda (Scott) Gates of Pace FL, Meredith (Cody) Sowell of Savannah GA; great-grandchildren Piper Smith and Kenna Smith of Milton FL and Annelise Gates and Brynlee Gates of Pace FL; sisters-in-law Daphne (Jack) Collins of Boston GA, and Gene (Cleburne) Faircloth of Macon GA; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents; a daughter, Janice F. Snead; and her sister, Marion Lucille H. Sims.

The family is grateful for the devoted care and loving kindness of Dr. Charles Sanders, Archbold Home Health Services, Hospice of Southwest Georgia, Home Instead, Jean Plymel, Elsie Redfern, Michelle Hall, and many special friends.

Memorials may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 2361, Thomasville, GA 31799 for the distribution of Bibles throughout the world or to the Dawson Street Baptist Church, 1025 N Dawson St, Thomasville, GA 31792.
