Doris Sutton Hughes

Doris Sutton Hughes, 87, beloved mother of Raymond and Robert Hughes, and grandmother of Jessie and Sam, died peacefully on September 5, 2006. Born on July 10, 1919, she was the elder daughter of John Parks and Aldie Brown Sutton of Fitzgerald. After graduating from Fitzgerald High School in 1937, and studying Music, French, and German at Bob Jones College in Cleveland, Tennessee, she taught public school music in Millen, Georgia, and in the Cairo school system. She subsequently pursued post-graduate studies in music and education at Florida State University, Valdosta State College, and East Stroudsburg State University in Pennsylvania.

On July 25, 1946, she married Samuel Osco ?Sco? Hughes in Thomasville, and began a career in music in Thomasville which spanned almost sixty years, working as Public School Music Supervisor for a number of years in the Thomasville City Schools; teaching Second Grade at Scott Elementary School; teaching at Brookwood School; playing at various times for services in almost every church in Thomasville; and above all, imparting her love and mastery of the piano to the many hundreds of her private pupils. When she was in her mid-sixties, she began a serious study of the organ as well, and played for several years on the Holtkamp Organ at the First Baptist Church, where she was a member.

In addition to her sons and grandsons, her survivors include her daughter-in-law, Lisa Reichert Hughes; her sister-in-law, Virginia Hughes; and her grandsons? mother, Joy Salter, and their stepfather, Ronnie, all of Thomasville; and her niece, Mary Jane Snowden White and her husband, Tom, of Fitzgerald; and two grand-nieces, Allison White of Fitzgerald, and Alecia White Barrett and her husband, Thomas, of Soperton.

Her husband, Samuel Osco Hughes, Jr., died on January 23, 2002, and her only sibling, Dorothy Sutton Snowden, died in 1975.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 8th at 4 pm at First Baptist Church. Burial will be private. The family is receiving friends at 628 Gordon Ave. from 6-10:00PM on Thursday.
