Graveside services for Dorothy Gehring Dekle, age 88, are at Noon on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Georgia Street. The Rev. Bob Dixon will officiate. Mrs. Dekle passed away peacefully on Friday, Apr. 7. She was born November 26, 1917 in the Territory of Hawaii to first-generation German immigrants, William and Marion Gehring. She married Ansel Dekle-Sr. in Honolulu on April 3, 1940. On the morning of December 7, 1941, they were at home in military housing when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. While Ansel sped to help other American servicemen, Dorothy watched the waves of bomber from her yard. The Japanese aircraft flew close enough for her to see the pilots smiling. Both remained in Hawaii during World War II. They moved to Georgia in 1953. She was a lifelong member of Harmony Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Dekle is predeceased by her parents, her brother, Henry Gehring, and her sister, Edna Gehring Bechert. Her beloved husband passed away in 1980. She is survived by a son, Ansel Dekle, Jr. of Houston, TX and a daughter Marion Kathryn Dekle of Marietta, GA. She also is survived by three grandchildren and three great grandsons. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131.
