Dorothy W. Mitchell departed this life on Saturday, September 26, 2020 after a long illness. She was born Dorothy Jean Watson on September 15, 1939 in Upson County, Georgia. Dorothy was the daughter of Thomas E. Watson and Ruthelle Goolsby Watson. She was affectionately known by her father as “Goober.”
A long time resident of Norcross, Georgia, Dorothy was a graduate of Norcross High School and Marsh Business College in Atlanta. In 1959 she married Kenneth Mitchell of DeKalb County, Georgia. They had one son, Mark, born in 1966.
Dorothy worked as a civilian employee of the United States Army Corps of Engineers during the 1960s. She was a housewife and stay at home mother for about eight years after the birth of her son. In the mid-1970s she returned to work as an employee of McFadden Publishing
Company in Atlanta, Georgia. After a few years working for McFadden, she returned to federal service as a tax examiner for the Internal Revenue Service.
After being widowed in 1991 and retiring from federal service, Dorothy re-located to Thomasville, Georgia along with her mother. Dorothy and her mother, Ruthelle, were members of the First Baptist Church of Thomasville. She is survived by her son Mark and daughter-inlaw Shelba.
Dorothy will be laid to rest next to Kenneth at Peachtree Memorial Gardens in Norcross, Georgia. The family is not receiving visitors at this time and will gather privately. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease Research.
