Beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend, Dorothy Maye Braswell Smith, age 99, went home to be with Jesus on July 29, 2026. Sweet "Dot" was welcomed to her heavenly home by her parents, Russell and Catherine Shepherd Braswell, her husband of thirty-eight years, Thornton D "Smitty" Smith, her grandson Joshua Smith, and her sisters Clarice Singletary, and Bobbie Bell.

Dot retired from her employment at Southern Bell after thirty-three years of service. After her retirement, Dot faithfully volunteered at Archbold Hospital where she was recognized and honored for over eight thousand volunteer hours.

Devoted to her family and friends, Dot had a servant's heart and the gift of hospitality. She welcomed visitors with warmth, generosity, and kindness and made everyone feel special, often giving them her famous mayhaw jelly and pound cake.

Dot was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Thomasville. During her almost one hundred years, she experienced many changes and challenges, but remained anchored in faith and drew courage from it. She leaves a legacy of unconditional love, wisdom, patience, humility, and service. Dot was truly a Proverbs 31 woman who demonstrated the "Fruits of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22-23).

Dot adored her children and grandchildren, and they adored, honored, and respected her. Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters and son; Melanie Smith, Cathy Smith (Howard), Kim Halder (Neal), Mark Smith (Elaine). Additionally, she is survived by her grandchildren; Jayson Palmer (Kimberly); Jenny Harvey (Mickey), Juliana Perry, Hudson Halder, Harrison Halder, and Holt Halder. She also leaves her great-grandchildren: Lainey, Lexi, Bray, Sullivan, Wade, Claire, Jayce, Mark Samuel, Jagger, Jaxon, Braxton, and Mattie.

Dot's family expresses their gratitude to the staffs of Legacy Village and Georgia Hospice for their loved-one's care during the final phase of her journey.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, on First Street in Laurel Hill Cemetery at 10:30 am, with Justin DeVentier officiating. For anyone wishing to honor Dot with a memorium, in lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to St Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
