Funeral services for Dorris Tidwell Smith, 88, of Thomasville are 10:00 am, Friday, February 15, 2008 at Allen & Allen Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Lee Waller will officiate and interment is in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Smith died February 13, 2008 at Camellia Gardens. Born August 11, 1919 in Lexington, Miss, she was the daughter of the late Elijah E. & Dessie Robertson Tidwell. She was married to Rev. Marcus Phillips Smith, Sr., who preceded her in death May 7, 1994. She was a member of Dawson Street Baptist Church. She graduated from Blue Mountain College and did her graduate work at New Orleans Baptist Seminary and was a high school teacher for 28 years with the Mississippi educational system. Additionally, Mrs. Smith directed adult and youth educational programs for Sulphur Springs Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, Miss, Conehatta Baptist Church in Conehatta, Miss, Locust Baptist Church in McComb, Miss, Eighth Avenue Baptist Church in Meridian, Miss and Dixie Baptist Church in Hattiesburg, Miss. She was a concert pianist, and enjoyed composing and writing music. Survivors include son & daughter-in-law, Marcus Phillips Jr. & Nancy Smith, of Thomasville, grandson, Mark Smith, III and wife Holly, of Whigham, great-grandsons, Cheshire Logan Smith and Tyler Phillips Smith, of Whigham, grandson, Monty Johnson and wife Donna, of Thomasville, great-grandson Lane, brother, Bob Tidwell of Hernado, Miss, special dear friends, Alice Horne, Becky Wheeler, Maureen Owen, Faye King all of Thomasville, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters Maude Ship, Ethel Frost, Odean Autry and Fannie Mae Cochran, brothers, John Mercer Tidwell, Buck Tidwell and Pepper Tidwell. Memorials maybe made to the Tom Wheeler Scholarship Fund at Dawson Street Baptist Church, 1025 N. Dawson St, Thomasville, Ga 31792 or Archbold Foundation, Gordon Ave at Mimosa Dr, Thomasville, Ga 31792 or charity of your choice. The family will receive friends 7-9 pm, Thursday, at Allen & Allen Funeral Home. Guests may sign the online guest register at www.allenfh.com
