Services for Doug M. Vick, 70 of Thomasville will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at First Baptist Church. Rev. Marty Carnes, Rev. Dr. Milton C. Gardner and Rev. Dr. Tom Jacobs will officiate with interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Vick passed away November 10 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born September 26, 1943 in Thomasville, he was the son of the late James Fondren Vick and Melva Pennington Vick. On February 19, 1966 he married Barbara Turner Vick who survives. Doug Vick loved people. He never met a stranger and was always looking to make a friend whenever the opportunity presented itself. Doug graduated from Thomasville High School in 1961 and excelled in football, baseball and track and field. He was voted "Most Athletic" his senior year earning All-State honors in both football and baseball. He was offered a professional baseball contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but declined out of a need to stay in Thomasville and help his father in their family building business. In 2000 he was inducted into the Thomasville-Thomas County Sports Hall of Fame, was a past board member of the Brookwood Booster Club and the South Georgia FCA. Doug was an active member in the First Baptist Church of Thomasville, GA where he served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. He was also a member of the administrative committee and building committee and participated in several mission trips over the years. He had a strong faith in Jesus Christ that was evident particularly in the way he approached his battle with leukemia over the last 19 months of his life. He had a heart for others and supported various charitable organizations in Thomasville / Thomas County. Doug was an experienced businessman and entrepreneur. He was known for his creative ideas, outgoing personality and for building lasting relationships through the retail trade. Doug has been directly involved with starting and managing several successful companies, securing numerous patents and creating dozens of retail products. He began his career in the Home Building Business. Doug built his first house at the age of 16 and spent over 30 years in that industry with notable projects throughout his hometown community of Thomasville, Georgia. At the age of 46, his entrepreneurial spirit lead him to co-found New Ideas International, a manufacturer of home and auto fragrance products known throughout the U.S. for their flagship product, Filtermate, a scented pad designed to be used in conjunction with a disposable air filter allowing fragrance to circulate throughout the entire home. Doug was directly involved in selling Filtermates to major retailers all over the country and with the help of the entire New Ideas team grew the business into a successful consumer products company. In 1996, Doug and his partners decided to sell the company to Blyth Inc. NYSE: BTH allowing Doug to begin a journey of inventing, developing, marketing and selling products in a variety of industries over the next 17 years including consumer home air care, electric power transmission and distribution, home and gift market, as seen on tv, and food and beverage industries. After two successful International real estate investments in Costa Rica in the late 1990's, Doug and his son, Kevin, co-founded Scentco, LLC in 2001 inventing several products under the Scentco brand including two award winning products, Paint Pourri - a long lasting scented paint additive and Filter Breeze - a scented latex spray applied directly to the HVAC air filter. While building the Scentco business, Doug formed a sister company, Boston Ideas, after his invention, Brightfeet Lighted Slippers, began to take off. Doug later sold his interest in Scentco and began concentrating on the sales of Brightfeet and other Boston Ideas products including, Redfin Energy Shots. Many of Doug's products have been featured on programs like Good Morning America, The Today Show, Fox and Friends, The View, HGTV, QVC and many others in addition to publications like Better Homes and Gardens, Real Simple and SkyMall Magazine. In addition, several of these products have been recognized with consumer and industry awards, including one that captured the "Build a Better Mousetrap" award given by ProductscanR for being one of the top 10 best domestic new product innovations of 2002. Doug was awarded "Entrepreneur of the Year" by South Georgia Magazine and has been recognized with various other awards over the years. Other survivors include his children, Thomas Kevin Vick and wife Sonia of Thomasville and Amanda Mandy Vick Roach and husband David of Carrollton, Ga; grandchildren, Tanner Vick Roach, Parker Watson Roach and Hayes Bennett Roach all of Carrollton, Mollie Catherine Vick, Anna Elizabeth Vick and Thomas Turner Vick all of Thomasville; brother, Larry Gene Vick and wife Myra of Inverness, FL; brother-in-law, James Thomas Turner, Jr. and wife Shirley of Richmond Hill, GA; 4 nephews and 2 nieces.
