E.W. (Smitty) Smith

July 10, 1927 — January 23, 2017

Celebration services for E.W (Smitty) Smith, 89 of Thomasville will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, January 27, 2017 at East Side Baptist Church. Rev. Tim Robson and Rev. Cham McMillian will officiate and interment will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Smith passed away January 23, 2017 at Legacy Village at Plantation Manor. Born July 10, 1927 in Bainbridge, he was the son of the late Samuel Shepherd Smith and Eva Overstreet Smith. On January 16, 1952 he married Mozelle Lyon Smith, who survives. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Navy and a member of East Side Baptist Church where he served as deacon for over 40 years. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1970 with a bachelors degree in education administration. He retired from Thomas Area Technical School where he taught machine shop, welding and auto mechanics. He became night school administrator in 1969 until 1982. He was co-founder, along with his son Marcus, of Smith Electric Motor Services and established C & S Machine Shop, along with his son Nelson, on March 14, 1974. Mr. Smith loved fishing, gardening, working in his yard and spending time with his family. He loved bluegrass and gospel music. He served for 45 years ministering in nursing homes, worked for the Lord through his church and served as a Gideon. Some people talked about their Faith but our Dad lived his. Thank you Dad for a Faith well lived before us and before all who knew him. Psalm 37:23 “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way”. Other survivors include son, Nelson L. Caviness and his wife Glenda of Thomasville; daughters, Sheryl Golden and husband Glenn of Thomasville, Sheila Knapp and husband Taylor of Thomasville; daughter-in-law, Rita Smith of Cairo; grandchildren, Scott & Lindsay Chastain, Derek & Julie Chastain, Lindsay & Mike Milam, Kelley & Chris Potts, Nelson Eddie & Stephanie Caviness, Cody Knapp and Justin Knapp; great-grandchildren, Haley Chastain, Will Chastain, Taylor Chastain, Grayson Chastain, Reed Milam, Will Milam, Christopher Potts, Anna Wilder Potts, Wynnie Potts and Sterling Fitzgerald Caviness. He is also preceded in death by son, Marcus E. Smith; brother, Charles Smith and sister, Gertrude Chason. Memorial contributions may be made to Lighthouse Children’s Home, 7771 Mahan Drive Tallahassee, Fl 32309 or H.E.L.P. Ministries, PO Box 1489, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041. The family will receive friends 5-7pm, Thursday, January 26 at the funeral home.
