Earlene Proctor

Earlene Hannon Proctor, 99, went to be with her Lord on Friday, May 23, 2025.
Born in the Hannon Family home in Worth County, GA, the eldest of eight children born to the late Johnny Calvin and Bertha Shiver Hannon. After completing her schooling in Worth County, she attended Andrew College, Georgia Southern University and got her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Georgia. Her roots in education ran far deeper than most. She started her career at Poulan Elementary School in 1944 and joined the Thomas County School System three years later at Meigs Consolidated School. She taught there until 1951 when she took a break to be a full-time housewife. In 1958, she returned to teaching at Ochlocknee Elementary School, spending one year there before returning to Meigs Elementary School. In1969 after the consolidation of Thomas County schools, she became a member of the first staff at Garrison-Pilcher Elementary School. She loved teaching the young students and made a lasting impression on so many over the years. She retired as a full-time teacher in 1985, then spent an additional nine years as a substitute. As her birthday approached each year, Earlene would let everyone know that Pearl Harbor was bombed on her birthday. She was 16 years old the day of the bombing, hearing the news on the radio. In 1950 she married Rion Beder Proctor, in Meigs Georgia; Rion was 43 years old and Earlene was 24 years old. On Valentine’s day 1953 their only child was born. Earlene and Rion shared 44 years together before his death in 1994. In 2015, Earlene decided it was time to give up house keeping and farming. She sold the property and moved to Nashville to be close to Michael and her grandchildren. She spent the last 10 years in an assisted living community, which she dearly loved. For several years she was the ambassador for the community.Family and family history was extremely important to Earlene. She loved her family dearly. She helped several family members compose their family history. Earlene loved family reunions and catching up with family members.She also loved the trips she was able to take most summers. She would come home with lots of pictures on slides and loved to share them over and over with family and friends. Earlene is survived by her son, Rion Michael Proctor (Beth), grandchildren: Tammy Marie Sullivan, Angela Machelle Bowe (Johnny), Heather Monique Hennessee (Kevin), Aundrea Michelle Covington; great grandchildren: Russell Allen Dunn, Robert Michael Dunn, Matthew Scott Bowe(Tasha), Hannah Leann Bowe (Taylor), Rion Eugene Hennessee, Kyla Jade Covington-Moyers; great great grandchildren Jackson Dunn, Harper Rose Dunn, and Addie Bowe. Earlene is also survived by one brother, Hermon Hannon; and one sister Gail Snipes; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, John Hannon and Grady Lee Hannon; and sisters, Rachel Poitevint, Marie Fritts, and Margaret Cribb and grandson Rocky Covington. Funeral service will be held at Damascus Methodist Church, 115 Damascus Church Road, Ty Ty,Georgia, Friday, May 30, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be at 2:00 P.M. in Sunset Cemetery, Meigs, Thomas County, Georgia. Allen & Allen Funeral Home, Thomasville, GA in charge of arrangements.
