Edward Joseph Bates

Graveside services for Edward Joseph Bates of Thomasville are at 1:00PM on Friday, August 8, 2003 at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Father Thomas Murphy will officiate. Mr. Bates died August 5, 2003 at Grady General Hospital in Cairo. Born May 22, 1931 in St. Louis, MO., he was the son of the late William Joseph and Genevieve Gund Bates. On August 18, 1951 he married Barbara Swann Bates who survives. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. He was retired from the U.S. Marines after 20 years of service and then retired from Archbold Memorial Hospital. Other survivors include daughters, Teresa Mitchell of Thomasville, Karen Hummell of Orange Park, Fl., Monica Barnard of Thomasville, Donna Villalta of Saginaw, MI. and Milissa Bates of Thomasville; fourteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren; sister, Jan Eldridge of Thousand Palms, MO., brothers, Paul Bates of Edwardville, IL., Jimmy Bates of Joplin, MO. and Robert Bates of San Diego, CA.
