A native of Thomasville, Judge McCollum was born on February 20, 1943 to Elliott P. McCollum Sr. and Louise Sewell McCollum. He was raised in Thomasville and graduated from Thomasville High School in 1961. After high school, he attended the University of Georgia and then Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. During his time in law school, he also joined the National Guard where he served his country for six years.
In 1966, he married Lorna Krinke of St. Paul, Minnesota. Upon completion of law school, Judge and Mrs. McCollum returned to Thomasville where he began practicing law at McCollum & McCollum with his father Elliott P. McCollum, Sr. and brother, Paul J. McCollum. In his law practice, Judge McCollum was a skilled trial attorney and won cases in the United States Supreme Court, the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Georgia. He zealously represented his clients and was known for his brilliant legal mind throughout South Georgia. In 1976, he was elected State Court Solicitor of Thomas County where he prosecuted criminal cases. He was also a certified mediator and was known for his ability to settle even the most highly contested cases. In 1985 he became Judge of the State Court of Thomas County where he served until his death. He had planned to retire from his judgeship at the end of this year. On the bench, Judge McCollum administered justice fairly and ran the court efficiently, always with the Thomas County citizens' best interests in mind.
Judge McCollum attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church and served in many positions at the church throughout his years including various positions on the vestry and warden of the endowment fund. Most recently, he helped create the new columbarium in the St. Thomas courtyard.
An avid fisherman, Judge McCollum enjoyed spending time with friends at his camp house on the Ochlocknee River. In his earlier years, he was a passionate hunter and a skilled marksman. Judge McCollum also loved spending time with his family, traveling with his wife, reading, gardening and following local and national politics. His dry wit and story-telling abilities will be missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his loving wife of forty six years, Lorna Krinke McCollum, daughter Molly McCollum Chapman Wade, Thomasville; son Sam McCollum Kelly, Leesburg, Virginia; son Eric McCollum Barbara, Thomasville; grandchildren Abby Chapman, J.P.
