Funeral services for Elmer Muggridge of Thomasville are at 2:00PM on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at Salem Baptist Church in Pavo, Georgia where he was a member. The Rev. Joe Dunn will officiate. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo. Active pallbearers will include Chad Fallin, Todd Fallin, Lyle Upton, Mark Upton, Charles Wilson and Sam Bass. Mr. Muggridge died April 3, 2006 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born September 19, 1911, he was the son of the late Charles Reiser and Eula Lewis Muggridge. On June 26, 1936 he married Nelie Kate Ferrell who preceded him in death. On January 13, 1990, he married Retha Mae Upton who survives. Mr. Muggridge served in World War II and started a bakery in Cairo after the war ended. Later he owned and operated a restaurant on Broad Street in Cairo and also owned the Dairy Queen. At the same time, Elmer and his wife Kate opened the first childrens? shop in Cairo, ?Kate & Elmer?s? which they operated for many years. Later, he slowed his pace and worked at Southwestern State Hospital as a security guard where he retired. A Sunday School teacher, official greeter, and deacon at Gordon Heights Baptist Church, he also saw a need and helped to found Memorial Baptist Church in Cairo. Survivors include his wife, Retha Mae Upton Muggridge, brothers and sisters-in-law, W. H. and Mary Muggridge of Macon, Bill and Gladys Muggridge of Thomasville, Harry and Thelma Muggridge of Bainbridge, sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Frank Pickens of Cairo, sisters Merle Moore of Whigham, and Mary Katherine McDuffie of Cairo, stepchildren Allen and Kathryn Upton of Thomasville, Joyce and Vince Fallin of Leesburg, and Merle Barron Upton of Thomasville, 10 step-grandchildren, 12 step great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Muggridge, of Cairo, and a stepson, Carl Upton, of Thomasville. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.
