Evelyn Parramore Sweat
Graveside services for Evelyn Parramore Sweat will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 18th on 14th Street at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville, Georgia. The Reverend Milton C. Gardner will officiate.
Mrs. Sweat was born in Thomas County on August 17, 1920. She was the daughter of Olin J. Parramore and Annie Sellers Parramore. She married Garnett Hull Sweat on March 3, 1940 and was a devoted wife until his death.
A lifelong resident of Thomasville, Evelyn enriched the community with her generous, loving nature, and her boundless love and devotion to family and friends. She was always available when anyone needed a helping hand, a cheerful word or a pound cake or dozens of her ?World?s Best Cookies?.
Known for her love of gardening, and fabulous cooking, especially mustard greens and fried chicken she never let you leave her home without a dish of something delicious or a slice of pound cake. Her enthusiasm for fishing was legendary among all who knew her. She couldn?t swim, but she must have fished from the shores of every pond in the greater Thomas County area; many times accompanied by her mother, Annie Parramore and then her sister Dorothy. Between them they count record holding catches of bass and bream. We have the pictures to prove it!
She delighted in her vegetable garden and grew the most wonderful crops of tomatoes, mustard greens and snap beans. Roses were her special love and she made beautiful arrangements for friends and family. The lemon tree?s annual crop was a celebration when she shared either the produce or tasty lemon meringue or chess pies.
Evelyn was the manager of the Fashion Shoppe which later became Friedlander?s from the time she was nineteen years old. She developed a following among the fashion conscious ladies of Thomasville that lasted until her retirement. For many brides she was a wedding planner before the term became popular.
As a member of the First Baptist Church she faithfully attended the Sunday morning services with Garnett until his health kept him home. After his death Evelyn was there every Sunday until her health began to fail. When she began to recognize her memory loss, she bravely fought to continue living as life independently as possible, remaining in the home she loved so much. But the struggle was long and her physical condition deteriorated as well.
When she was moved to the Alzheimer?s wing at an assisted living facility; her goal was always to return home. Her strong will prevailed and much to the surprise and delight of all, her health and memory slowly seemed to be returning. It was devastating that this March, after a prolonged hospital stay for treatment of pneumonia and the therapy to restore her strength she returned to assisted living; fell and broke her hip. Mrs. Sweat died July 13th of complications resulting from the hip replacement surgery.
She is survived by her sister, Lorene Parramore Malone Davis; nieces, Barbara Malone of Atlanta, Georgia and Gloria Saxon Hatcher Flannery of Tifton, Georgia; and nephews, Judson Malone of Columbia, Maryland, Sandy Saxon of Meansville, Georgia and Jay Parramore of Dyer, Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John William Parramore; her sister, Dorothy Jean Saxon; and her niece, Anne Malone Moon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Evelyn Sweat Memorial Fund, Alzheimer?s Association, 1925 Century Blvd., Suite 10, Atlanta, GA. 30345.
