Services for F. Alex Crittenden, Jr., 87, of Thomasville, are at 3 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009 at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mike Huling and Rev. Bob Dixon will officiate and interment is in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Crittenden died Nov. 29 at Plantation Manor. Active Pallbearers are Derek Lawhorn, Jeremy Hathaway, Alex Ingle, Heath Carnline, Jerrod Shealey and Jared Carter. Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Exchange Club. Born, Sept. 22, 1922, in Pelham, he was the son of the late Fernando A. and Lula White Crittenden. On March 26, 1950, he married Christine Barwick Crittenden, who survives. The family moved to Meigs in 1932. He graduated from Meigs High School as Valedictorian of the class of 1939. He attended Emory Junior College at Valdosta. He moved to Thomasville in 1941 and was employed by W. Lewis Wilson, CPA as a junior accountant. He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Force in September, 1942 and graduated from the U.S. Army Administration School in Hattiesburg, Miss. in December, 1942. He joined the 95th Bomb Group in Rapid City, S.D. and from there he spent 26 months with Eight Air Force at Station 119, Horham, Suffolk, England. While he was in England he was a member of the 95th Stardusters Dance Band. He entered the University of Georgia in January, 1946 and received his BBA degree in June, 1948, with a major in accounting. While at the University he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, Phi Kappa Literary Society and the Georgia Bulldog Orchestra. He returned to Thomasville in 1948 to become associated with the accounting firm of W. Lewis Wilson and Associates. After receiving his certificate as a CPA, he became a partner in the firm. After the death of W. Lewis Wilson in 1966 he merged the firm with the firm of Davis and Freeman, the new firm was Davis, Crittenden, Freeman and Richter. He retired as a senior partner in the firm of Davis, Crittenden, Richter and Fletcher in 1986. A member of the Georgia Society of CPA?s, he was a past president of the Albany Chapter of the Georgia Society, had served as chairman of the CPA consultation Committee, a member of the Committee for Cooperation with Accounting Educators. He was one of the founding members of the Southwest Georgia Chapter of the Georgia Society and was a member of the board of directors of the Georgia Society for three years and was a member of the board of directors of the Educational Foundation of the Georgia Society for three years and served as chairman of the finance committee of the Educational Foundation. He served for twenty-four years as a member of the Thomasville-Thomas County Planning and Zoning Commission and for eighteen of those years as secretary. He was a member of the Thomasville-Thomas County Zoning Board of Appeals, serving for three years and was vice-chairman of that board in 1988. He served one term as president of the Thomasville Community Council. Alex joined the Thomasville Exchange Club in 1949 and served that organization as secretary and president in 1955. He was named ?Exchangite of the year? by the local club in 1955 and in 1957. In recognition of fifty years service the Thomasville Club presented him with a life membership in the National Exchange Club in 1999. He served the National Exchange Club as district governor of the 4th District of Georgia for the years 1957 and 1958. He was selected as ?Georgia?s Outstanding ?Exchangite? for the year 1958-1959. He served Georgia Exchange as a member of the State Board of Control for three years, 1960-1963. He served as secretary of the Georgia District Exchange Clubs for the year 1972. He served as district director of Division 7 of the Georgia District for two years, treasurer for one year, secretary for one year and president-elect for the year 1979-1980. He served as president of the Georgia District Exchange Clubs for the year 1980-1981. Under his leadership four new clubs were chartered, resulting in an increase in membership. Since serving as president he has been chairman of the Long-Range Planning Committee and active member of the Past-Presidents Committee. Alex was one of the original incorporators of the Thomasville Exchange Club Agricultural Fair Association, Inc., the sponsoring organization of the ?Deep South Fair?. He served as secretary-treasurer of that organization for eleven years. He was elected president of the Fair Association for the year 1972 and has remained an active member of the board of directors since then. Alex was one of the incorporators of the Thomasville-Thomas County Rose Show Pavilion, Inc. This corporation was formed to build permanent building for use by the Thomasville Garden Club for the annual Rose Show and for use by other local charitable, civic and business groups. This corporation is now the Conference Center of Thomas County, Inc. and he continued to serve as an executive director of the corporation. A life-long Methodist, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he has served on the official board. He was a charter member of the Lawson Neel Sunday School Class and a supporter of the Lawson Neel Med Bank. He was a part-time member of Highlands United Methodist Church in Highlands, N.C. He was an active member of Glen Arven Country Club since 1949, having served as co-chairman of the entertainment committee. He was a member of the University of Georgia National Alumni Association and the Georgia Bulldog Club. He served as president of the UGA Bulldog Club in Thomasville for three years. He was a charter member of the Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage Museum in Savannah and was a life member of the 95th Bomb Group Association. He was a corporate member for life of the Archbold Medical Center. Alex Crittenden loved his wife, his family, his church, Exchange, the accounting profession, the University of Georgia and music. He studied piano for ten years and then learned to play alto sax. He played alto sax and piano in the original Osco Hughes Orchestra in 1941-1942. Osco Hughes was his closest friend from 1941 until his death in 2002. During his latter years he prided himself with being a genealogy researcher and held memberships in the Thomasville Genealogical, History and Fine Arts Library, Inc. and the South Georgia Genealogical Society. He also held memberships in the Thomas County Library, the Hudson Library in Highlands, N.C., the Thomasville Cultural Center, Inc., the Thomas County Historical Society, American Legion Post 31 and Thomasville Landmarks, Inc., where he had served on the board of directors and on the finance committee. Survivors include children, Laura Hathaway and husband, Ray of Greenville, S.C., Janet Ingle and husband, Rusty of Brentwood, Tenn., Mark Crittenden and wife, Jeanie of Boston and Becky Crittenden and Steve Chaney of Boston; grandchildren, Derek Lawhorn and wife, Teresa, Lyndi Hathaway, Jeremy Hathaway, Allison Ingle, Alex Ingle, Heath Carnline and Jerrod Shealey; great-grandchildren, Andrew Lawhorn, Aaron Lawhorn and Adam Lawhorn; extended family, Raymond Hughes, Robert and Lisa Hughes and the Barwick family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church or to John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital.
