Freddie Michael "Mike" Palmer
Services for Freddie Michael "Mike" Palmer, 56, of Thomasville, are at 3 p.m., Sunday, August 8, 2010 at Northwoods Church of God. The Rev. Dan Tomberlin will officiate and interment is in Laurel Hill Cemetery on Mississippi Street. Mr. Palmer died August 6, 2010 after a brief illness. Born, December 10, 1953, in Thomas County, he was the son of the late WL and Vera Benton Palmer. He graduated from Thomasville High School and subsequently worked his way through college, graduating from Valdosta State University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He began his career in law enforcement in 1977 when he obtained employment with the Thomas County Sheriff's Office. He worked there as a deputy sheriff in the patrol division and also as a criminal investigator. He left the Thomas County Sheriff's Office in October of 1981 after being offered employment with the State Board of Pardon and Paroles. He worked for the Parole Board in Albany for 18 years where he ascended to the rank of Assistant Chief of the Albany District Field Office. He returned home to Thomasville in May 2003 to take care of his beloved father after getting a transfer to the Thomasville Diversion Center. He remained at the Thomasville Diversion Center until February 2008 at which time he transferred to the Thomasville Probation Office where he was working at the time of his demise. He was especially fond of his co-workers at the Thomasville Probation office as he said that they were the finest people he had ever worked with. He was an avid outdoorsman who had a very special love for God's creation. He spent many hours fishing and just enjoying being close to nature. He especially enjoyed spending time at his uncle's farm where he would fish and swim in the ponds there and would take long walks through the fields to pray and meditate. He was also very much into physical fitness and spent many hours in the gym working out and trying to keep himself strong and healthy. He was a faithful member of Northwoods Church of God where he served as a church trustee and also taught the Senior Sunday School Class for 17 years. He was first and foremost a follower of Jesus Christ whom he loved deeply, having established a very real relationship with the Lord when he was just a young man. He also was a devoted son who possessed a very tender love for his parents and endeavored to take care of them in their old age. Perhaps his greatest achievement was taking care of his elderly father for six years while he suffered from dementia. Mike's time on earth was relatively brief but he realized that he was but a stranger and pilgrim in this world and that his real home was in heaven. The great desire of his heart was to be with the Lord and to dwell in his presence for evermore.
