The family and friends of Frederick E. Johnson, age 85, of Thomasville Georgia, are saddened to announce his passing on Saturday, January 24th, 2009 due to complications suffered from a fall that occurred on Christmas Eve, 2008.
Fred was born to Emor and Harriet Johnson of Greentown, Indiana on March 3, 1923. He graduated from Greentown H.S. in 1941 where he was a member of the basketball team. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII including active duty on the island of Saipan.
He formerly resided in Saginaw, Michigan where he founded the still active Johnson Carbide Products, Inc., a manufacturer of precision carbide cutting tools. An energetic entrepreneur, he later founded Southern Carbide, Inc. in Pavo, GA, specializing in surgical carbide cutting tools. Southern Carbide, Inc. is currently located in Quitman, GA.
He was baptized on April 24, 1958 into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints now the Community of Christ Church by Elder Archie Harder of Bayport, Michigan. He served in the church priesthood in the capacity of Priest from 1962-78.
He is survived by his daughter Amy Lou Hebert and son-in-law Tim Hebert of Pavo, Georgia, son Mark Frederick Johnson, daughter-in-law Agnes, two grandsons, Raymund and James of Dorr, Michigan, and sister Margaret Wright of Columbus, Indiana. He was predeceased by his brothers Ben Johnson, Bob Johnson, and sister Jane Bell.
He was master wood craftsman and built much of the furniture in his own home as well as other unique pieces at the request of friends and family. An expert fisherman, he loved nature and the outdoors and especially enjoyed his countless fishing forays into the Canadian wilderness with family and friends.
Fred was known for his ready smile and generosity and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
In life, he requested that his ashes be cast upon the waters of Catfish Creek in Greentown , Indiana where he played and fished as a boy.
An outdoor Memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 31st, at 2:00 P.M. in Pavo, GA at the gazebo on Amy & Tim's pond where Fred enjoyed many pleasurable hours of fishing and relaxing. The service will be officiated by Dr. Dale Lick of Tallahasee, Florida.
