Gary Douglass

August 31, 1939 — November 14, 2016

Erman Gary “Doug” Douglass, 77, died peacefully at his home on November 14, 2016 with his family at his side. A resident of Thomasville, Doug was born on August 31, 1939. He is the son of the late Erman Ottway and Artie Mae Douglass of Lake City, Florida.
Doug was a devoted family man, with a kind and gentle soul. He enjoyed gardening, working in his wood shop, and helping others. He was an active member of the Thomasville First United Methodist Church and a regular volunteer at the Thomas County Food Bank. Doug was a former President of the Thomasville Kiwanis Club where he was a member for many years. Following graduation from Forest Ranger School and two years at the University of Florida, he traveled to the west coast to fight forest fires. Upon his return, he attended Florida State University where he graduated with his Bachelors in Advertising and Public Relations and served in the United States Army National Guard for 6 years.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Maxine Howell Douglass; his son, Jeffrey Douglass; his daughter, Jennifer Douglass Futrill (Jack) and his two granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Sydney Jackson; his two sisters, Gayle Douglass Mason of Spartanburg, S.C. and Becky Douglass Thomas (Ruben) of Lake City, F.L., and aunt Alice Darby, of Jacksonville, as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Allen & Allen Funeral Home 110 W. Hansell St, Thomasville, Georgia 31792. Service will be Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 2:00 PM at The First United Methodist Church 425 N. Broad St, Thomasville, Georgia 31792. Graveside service will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville, Georgia.
Honorary pallbearers are the The Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class and The 4th Sunday Usher Team.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Thomas County Food Bank 430 N. Broad St. Thomasville, Georgia 31792; First United Methodist Church 425 N. Broad St. Thomasville, Georgia 31792, or to a charity of your choice.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude and love to many friends and family members, especially Mike and Shirley Howell Kurtz and Cecelia Wager, as well as Hospice of Southwest Georgia, for their extraordinary support in his final days.
