Gary Kent King, 76, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, November 27, 2015. He was born February 25, 1939 in Mayfield, Kentucky to the late Irene Bynum and James Howard King. Gary was a proud Vietnam War veteran and devoted husband and father.
Gary graduated from Mayfield High School in 1957 where he was a defensive back on the football team and an eagle scout. After high school he joined the US Army and served as a rocket crewman and a rifle sharpshooter. Gary received his Bachelor of Science degree from Murray State University in 1969 where he studied Political Science. He began his career at Merit Clothing Company working as a credit manager. He later worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers and finally retired as a mining engineer from Waverly Mineral Company.
Gary married the love of his life, Jane Anne Burd in 1966, and they lived together in Mayfield, KY before relocating to Thomasville, GA in 1985.
As a young man Gary coached youth football. He took great pride in knowing that he left a lasting impression on the lives of many young people, teaching them valuable life lessons through sports. He was very active in the lives of his children serving as a football and baseball coach, scout master, and band parent.
Gary will be remembered for his intelligence, sense of humor, loyal friendship, fun loving personality, and always putting the needs of his family above himself.
Gary is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jane Anne, son Timothey and wife Jeannine of Baton Rouge, LA, daughter Melissa and Jack of Tampa, FL, and his beloved pets.
A memorial service will be held at the Allen & Allen Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, December 3rd, 2015 at 1:00pm with Reverend Ron McCaskill officiating. Condolences may be left on Gary's online guest book at
