Gary Gene Pitts of Thomasville, dedicated father, grandfather, brother, and beloved friend went to be with his Heavenly Father on Saturday morning, November 23, 2024 at the age of 75. Gary was born on September 30, 1949 in Moultrie, Georgia to the late Gene and Atha Pitts. He was well known for his unwavering commitment to his family and friends as well as his strong work ethic and dedication to helping others around the community.
Gary earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Valdosta State College in 1971 and later earned a Master of Business Administration degree. After marrying his college sweetheart, Dorothy Thompson Pitts, he joined the United States Marine Corps and attended the USMC Officer’s Candidate School. After serving his country for three years, he worked as a supervisor with Deering-Milliken until 1980. He then began working with Coats & Clark, later Coats American, as a supervisor and retired early with the company in 2004 as a Vice President of Safety. He and Dorothy moved back to Thomasville, and he began his final career at Southwest Georgia Technical College, where he worked as the Vice President of Economic Development until his final retirement in December 2013.
Outside of his professional life, Gary was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Thomasville, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. He was also a member of the Gideons International and served on the board of the local Boys and Girls Club. Gary also volunteered his time to serve others by packing food bags with his grandchildren every Wednesday afternoon at Backpack Buddies. He was dedicated to fitness and could always be found at the local YMCA every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday playing basketball or running. In addition, Gary was an avid Georgia bulldogs and Atlanta Braves fan.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Jessica (Betsy) Garbett and her husband Clint of Boston; son Gary Arthur Pitts of Thomasville; his brothers Robby Pitts and wife Shannon of Moultrie and Craig Pitts and wife Deborah of Moultrie; sister-in-law Kay Thompson of Columbus; grandchildren Frank Colton Garbett, Elizabeth Claire Garbett, and George Cohen Garbett.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Thompson Pitts, his son Billy Thompson Pitts, his brother Jamie Pitts, and his brother-in-law George Herman Thompson.
A service will be held to celebrate the life of Gary Gene Pitts at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Thomasville Sanctuary.
