Georgia Boykin Ferguson of Thomasville died July 30, 2012, after a long fulfilled life with numerous friends and family members. Born in Screven County, Georgia on August 17, 1914, she was the daughter of George Pierce Boykin and Anna Wyant Boykin. After a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Georgia, she taught elementary education for several years before coming to Thomasville to teach and subsequently meeting and marrying the late Lonnie Dunlap Ferguson.
Mrs. Ferguson, "Georgia," as she preferred to be called by everyone, began her civic work in Thomasville as a "grey lady" at Finney General Hospital where she wrote letters to family members for wounded soldiers of WWII. She was a longtime supporter of Archbold Memorial Hospital where Mr. Ferguson had served as a board member for so many years. Endeared to people of all ages, Georgia and Lonnie made a truly great team with close relationships locally and throughout Georgia and Florida.
Mrs. Ferguson has served in many leadership roles in local and state capacities. She was both a charter member and past president of several organizations, including the Thomasville Entertainment Foundation, the Junior Service League and Rambler Rose Garden Club.
Her name was placed on the National Roll of Honor of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America NSCDA for distinguished service. She was a member of the Board of Managers of the NSCDA in the State of Georgia for many years. She represented the Thomasville Town Committee as Chairman and later held the state offices of Historian and Vice President. She also enjoyed her tenure as the Georgia Society's Associate Trustee for Sulgrave Manor in England. These activities and friends during almost four decades of being widowed from her beloved Lonnie were a great sustaining force in later years.
She is survived by daughters, Anna Ferguson Duff husband, Steven of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and New York, NY and Gladys Ferguson Muggridge husband, William of Thomasville; granddaughter, Wendy Mays Spencer husband, Rodney of Washington D.C. and Tallahassee; grandson, Warren Cameron Mays wife, Anne of Vero Beach, Fl; 5 great-grandchildren: Parker Hathaway wife, Jillian of Chicago, Boyd Hathaway of Tallahassee, and Warren Mays , Austin Mays and Erin Mays of Vero Beach.
