Gloria Miller Chastain Lewis

August 1, 1927 — February 2, 2014

Gloria (Miller) Chastain Lewis, 86, of Thomasville, passed away February 02, 2014. Born on August 1, 1927 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to Raymond and Catherine Judd Miller, she moved to Thomasville at 18 years old after meeting her first husband, Patrick Chastain, Sr. in Norfolk, Virginia at a local diner, while he was serving in the U.S. Navy. They were married for 32 years and had six children.

At the age of 44, Gloria went back to school to earn her GED and continue her education. She completed her Licensed Practical Nurse certification in 1974 from Thomas County Vocational School. She did private duty nursing, including a lengthy nursing position with “Jock” Whitney at the Greenwood Plantation. Gloria moved to Atlanta for a few years after her divorce, but returned to the Thomasville area in 1987. She loved finding great bargains, dining out and vacationing in St. Augustine, Florida. She bravely fought her cancer for about two years and managed to keep her sense of humor until the end.

She is survived by her six children: Karyl Chastain Beal (Ronnie) of Columbia, TN; Pat Chastain, Jr. (Rose) of Ellijay GA; Tom Chastain (Sheryl) of Conyers, GA; Rebecca Chastain Bigsby (Bob) of Wayne, NJ; Teresa Chastain Balatico (Mac) of Pasadena, MD, Julie Chastain (Ricky) of Pavo, GA.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Ron Beal, Cyndi Chastain Tufts, Melanie Chastain Moore, Leslie Chastain, Thomisa Chastain Kendrick, Tommy Chastain, Jr. Alyson Bigsby Triolo, Carson Chastain Bigsby, Marisa Chastain Balatico, Matthew Beamon, Casey Chastain Stocker, and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Arlyn Beal.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Teresa Coleman, Dr. Patrick Fenlon, Dr. Mark Wood, and Hospice of South West Georgia and their staffs.

At Ms. Lewis’s request, there will be a private burial for family. Friends and family may visit on Friday, February 07, 2014 at the home of her daughter, Karyl Chastain Beal, 1406 E. Washington Street, Thomasville between 7 pm and 9 pm. Guests may sign the online register at www.allenfh.com .
