Gloria K. Slaughter

December 13, 1938 — August 16, 2022

Gloria Kirkland Slaughter passed away on August 16, 2022 in Thomasville, Ga. She was born to Calvin and Inez Kirkland on December 13, 1938 in Abbeville, Alabama, the youngest of three girls. She graduated from Abbeville High School where she was crowned Miss Abbeville and graduated in 1958 from Samford University, formerly known as Howard College, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen. She married the love of her life, William Gains Slaughter on June 2, 1960. She supported him during his time in medical school at the University of Alabama and his military career in Vietnam, Texas, Maine, California, West Point, Augusta and finally retiring in Thomasville, GA. She was a teacher and later became a stay-at-home mom while raising their three sons.
She was a world traveler and especially loved the time she spent in Australia and New Zealand. She loved playing the stock market, reading, and supporting the public library. She was an avid supporter of the military and sent many care packages to military personnel across the world. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Thomasville where she sang in the choir and especially loved teaching a high school Sunday School class for over 20 years. At the age of 78, she was rated a 4.5 tennis player and having this ranking meant playing with players 30-40 years younger than her. She won numerous USTA tournaments during the 50 plus years she played.
She is survived by her three sons, Phillip (Sharon), Michael (Amanda) and Andrew (Laurie), her grandchildren Patrick (Sara), Jordan, Anna, Ava, Mariah (Bryan) Bailey, Harrison, Colson, and Marshall Slaughter and in addition her step-grandchildren, Zach and Spencer (Hannah) Sherrod, and greatgrandchildren, Landon and Caroline Slaughter, and step-great grandchild, Sawyer Sherrod, and many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
A Memorial Service will be Sunday, August 21st at 2pm in the chapel at Allen and Allen. Remembrances may be made to The USO or Thomas County Public Library.
