Services for Grover Cleveland Newton, Jr., 86, of Thomasville are at 11:00AM on Monday, March 25, 2013 at First Baptist Church Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Milton C. Gardner and The Rev. Dr. Tom Jacobs will officiate and interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Newton died Saturday, March 23 at Southern Pines. Born October 1, 1926 in Thomasville, he was the son of the late Grover C. Newton and Maggie Hood Newton. He graduated from Thomasville High School where he played quarterback for the Thomasville Bulldogs and attended Emory Jr. College. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. He worked for Timberlake Grocery Company, in Thomasville and was Co-owner and President of Adel Grocery Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Thomasville and served as Jr. Deacon, Deacon and Deacon Emeritus. He was a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Director and on numerous other committees. Mr. Newton was a Gideon, former member of First Baptist in Adel, member of the Lions Club and Kiwanis Club. Survivors include his wife Margaret Hardy Newton, daughters and son-in-laws, Carole and Steve Brett of Tifton, Diane and Glenn Beard of Adel, grandchildren, Leslie Brett Addison Trey, Lindsey Brett Franks Waylon, Stephen E. Brett, Jr., Meredith Margaret Beard and Emily Rebecca Beard. He was preceded in death by his brother J.T. Turner. Memorials may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 2361, Thomasville, GA 31799.
